The first school at St. Mary's was located on the site of the present school on Fulton Street. The original frame church stood on this site and was enlarged into a two story building with several rooms. The first teachers were Sisters of St. Mary Namur, from Lockport, N.Y. They lived in a convent on High Street and went back and forth to school every day in hacks. When Elmira and the Southern Tier Counties were transferred to the Rochester Diocese, Bishop McQuaid sent the Sisters of St. Joseph from Rochester to teach in St. Mary's School. Mother Sylvester was the first Superior and came to St. Mary's August 28, 1897. Mother Sylvester is now Mother Superior at St. Joseph's Hospital. With her came Sister Antonia who taught the Sixth Grade. She is now at the Sisters' Home at Wayland, N.Y.; Sister Victorine who taught the Seventh Grade has since died; Sister Vincentia, deceased; Sister Agnita who taught the First and Second Grades died on August 8, 1898. Sister Cassiana, now housekeeper at Oswego, N.Y.; Sister Leonella came two weeks later to teach Third and Fourth Grades. She is now at St. Ambrose, Rochester, N.Y.

The Sisters first lived in a little house down on Fulton Street but moved to the present convent on October 24, 1898 -- St. Raphael's Day. The accounts of the building of the new school and the new convent will be found in this booklet with the general history of the parish.

Mother Sylvester says that she started the school in the old church building which had six rooms for eight grades. Father O'Dwyer was pastor when the school opened -- Father Moriarty was assistant. the following sisters have taught on the faculty of St. Mary's School from its beginning to the present day:
