Girl Scouts of St. Mary's

Among the younger organizations of the parish is the Girl Scouts. Early in 1934 upon the suggestion of Father Moriarty, Sister Miriam Joseph undertook the task of starting a girl scout troop. With Katherine O'Connor as leader and Catherine Vonderlin as assistant the first group was registered in May, 1934 as Troop 20.

It was soon evident that the program of hikes, parties, games, nature and fun appealed to the girls for a second troop, 23, was started in 1935 with Mrs. Richard Connelly and Mrs. John O’Neil as leaders and a third troop, 27, was organized in 1937 under the leadership of Cathryn Liddy and later of Florence Stapleton. Troop 20 disbanded in 1937 and Troop 27 was discontinued in 1940. Troop 23 continues under the present leadership of Margaret O'Connor.

Other leaders and assistants were Mary O'Brien, Kathryn Gableman, Mrs. Leon Hogg, Rita Donahue, Mary Virginia Sheehan, Father Hogan, Mrs. John Huonker, Adlyn David, Kitty Ann Murphy, Ann Connelly and Mary Elizabeth Gaiser. Special mention should be given to Katherine O'Connor, first leader; Florence Stapleton, who at one time conducted two troops, and thus has six years of service; and to Mrs. Hogg who served as leader from 1939 to 1946.

Other activities of the scouts over the years have included city wide Communion breakfasts, glee clubs, parades, visits to hospitals, plants and historic sites, community projects, such as assisting in Christmas seal distribution and aiding the visiting nurses as well as activities at Stanley Woods.

In these activities the Scouts were aided by members of the Troop Committee, who have supplied at various times money, transportation and personal assistance.
