Assistant Pastors

Listed in the annals of St. Mary's Parish are many priests who served as assistant pastors during the long history of St. Mary's. Among the first mentioned are Fathers Purcell (deceased) and the Reverend J.J. Moriarty who later became administrator and finally third pastor of St. Mary's -- also deceased.

Following the above mentioned priests were Fathers Hugh Crowley (deceased), Thos. Carroll (deceased), Daniel Quigley (deceased), Father George V. Predmore, now pastor of Holy Apostles Church, Rochester, N.Y., Francis Walker (deceased), Francis B. Burns now on the faculty of St. Bernard's Seminary, Rochester, N.Y., Father John Duffy, who was here for a brief time and is now pastor of St. Augustine's Church, Rochester, N.Y. The Reverend William J. Devereaux, pastor of St. Columba's at Caledonia, N.Y.; the Rev. John L. Maxwell, pastor of St. Leo's Church, Hilton, N.Y.; the Reverend Irvin C. Sullivan, now residing in Auburn, N.Y.; the Reverend Joseph P. Haffey, assistant pastor of St. Aloysius, Auburn, N.Y.; Rev. William J. Gaynor, assistant pastor at St. Patrick's Elmira, N.Y.; the Reverend J. Edward McKay, assistant pastor at St. Vincent de Paul, Corning, N.Y.; the Reverend Edward J. Waters, assistant pastor at Our Lady of Good Council, Rochester, N.Y.; the Reverend Richard g. Stanton, assistant pastor at St. Anthony's Rochester, N.Y.; the Reverend Joseph L. Hogan professor at St. Andrew's Seminary, Rochester, N.Y.; the Reverend Francis E. Hester, assistant pastor at old St. Mary's Rochester, N.Y.; the Reverend Vincent P. Collins, assistant pastor at the Church of the Immaculate conception, Ithaca, N.Y.; the Reverend Francis Harding, pastor of St. Patrick's Church, Cato, N.Y.; the Reverend Chas. G. Langworthy, assistant pastor at St. Mary's Auburn, N.Y.; the Reverend Albert H. Schnacky, assistant director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine of Rochester, N.Y., and the present assistant pastors, Rev. James C. Lane and Reverend Leo E. Lynch.

From the opening of the temporary church in May, 1872, through Sunday, April 4th, 1948, 5,102 people have been baptized in St. Mary's Parish. From the beginning of the parish up to and including April 10th, 1948, 1,426 marriages were performed. There have been sever boys ordained to the Holy Priesthood from St. Mary's parish and 29 girls have embraced the religious life in various orders. At present, there are three young men from the parish studying for the priesthood, two with the Jesuits and one with the Franciscans.
