Bishop Kearney came to Elmira for the Mother's Day celebration in 1944 and we read in the Catholic Courier under the date of May 18th noted:

BISHOP KEARNEY IN TRIBUTE TO
"FOUR GREATEST MOTHERS" AT
HOLY NAME MEN BREAKFAST

Over 300 men, including uniformed representatives of the police and fire departments and members of local guard and auxiliary military police organizations, received Holy Communion with the Holy Name Society at St. Mary’s Church on Mother's Day. they attended a Communion Breakfast at the mark Twain Hotel to hear the Most Rev. James E. Kearney, Bishop of Rochester, pay stirring tribute to the "Four greatest Mothers --the Mother of God, our own Mothers, Mother Country and Holy Mother Church."

The Rev. Thomas J. Toole, pastor of St. Mary's acted as master of Ceremonies, and presented the Bishop.

There were, in addition at the Speakers' Table, Frederick Mulcahy and Walter Callahan, members of the Breakfast Committee, Andrew Von Hendy. Father Toole introduced the envelope system in June of 1944.

ENVELOPE SYSTEM BEGINS IN ST. MARY'S CHURCH

Effective next Sunday, June 4, the envelope system will be in use at St. Mary's church and the Rev. Thomas J. Toole, pastor, requests the cooperation of all parishioners in their use so that a complete record of those in the parish may be had from this source. Any member of the parish who did not receive envelopes last Sunday may obtain them by calling at the rectory.

In June 1944, the Altar and Rosary Society gave over $1,000 for repairs to the convent. In the Catholic Courier of June 8 we read:

GROUP RAISES $1,000 FOR CONVENT REPAIRS

At the regular monthly meeting of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Mary's Church a report was made showing that in excess of $1,000 had been raised to make many needed repairs to the Convent.

A large committee led by Mrs. Leon Hogg was responsible for this fine undertaking.

Plans have been completed for a supper to be given on Sunday evening in the school hall in honor of the graduating class of St. Mary's School.

We close this history with some notations from the Catholic Courier of June 8, 1944, June 22 and Sept. 9th of the same year:

ST. MARY'S WINS PARISH LEAGUE TITLE

St. Mary's won the championship of the Knights of Columbus sponsored Parochial School League with a victory over the second place St. Patrick's teams.

St. Mary's were winners of the first round but were forced into an extra inning game to cinch the second and championship with a four-run barrage in the overtime affair.

Presentation of the trophy will be made at a banquet to be held in Columbus Center on Saturday, June 17.
