Reverend John S. Maloney


Father Maloney was born in Elmira, N.Y. His primary education was at No. 7 School and St. Mary's School. After attending Southside High School, he attended St. Andrew's and St. Bernard's Seminaries at Rochester, N.Y. He was ordained by Archbishop Mooney in the old St. Patrick's Cathedral in the same city on June 6, 1936. He celebrated his first mass on the next day in St. Mary's at Elmira, N.Y. His first assignment was the Blessed Sacrament at Rochester, N.Y. where he spent six years. In February of 1942, Father Maloney was commissioned First Lieutenant in the Chaplains Corp of the US Army. After one month of the chaplain school at Fr. Benjamin Harrison in Indiana, he spent six months with the Coast Artillery in Delaware. He then volunteered for the parachute troops and stayed with them for three years attached to the 111th Airborne Division and was with this division through all the campaigns in the ETO. Father Maloney was returned to inactive duty with the rank of Major in October, 1945. After he was discharged, Father Maloney was assigned as assistant pastor at St. Patrick's church, Elmira, N.Y. Father Maloney now occupies a responsible position of spiritual director at St. Bernard's Seminary at Rochester, N.Y.
